Originally funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s Ohio Five Digital Scholarship Grant, elsewhere.anywhere is an online publication created by the students of GMDS-ENGL-1600: Digital Voices: Travel Writing, a course offered at The College of Wooster. Taught by Dr. Jennifer Hayward and assisted by Samuel Boudreau ’23, the course explores travel writing’s foundational concepts to enrich students’ own literary compositions, skills, and techniques. While guiding students’ own works, the course also reflects on travel writings’ Eurocentric faults and redefines the genre.
The Spring 2021 edition of elsewhere.anywhere tracks the relationship between one’s inner and outer journey in cultural contact zones. With an emphasis on humor’s role in travel writing, our journeys will push us to redefine travel writing through place, inclusivity, and the genre as a whole. The publication’s stories are written by GMDS-ENGL-1600 students for an audience consisting of the College of Wooster student body and all interested in traveling
To facilitate an understanding of these different themes, the selected submissions have been organized into distinct categories: Journeys through the Contact Zone, Redefining Travel, and Humor.
For publicity purposes, elsewhere.anywhere has a social media presence on platforms, including Instagram and Twitter. The Instagram features travel photos and stories from the entire Elsewhere.Anywhere community. The Twitter page helps to promote the magazine, giving updates on the publication status of the different issues.
